Who We Are
Goodwill Industries of Wyoming began in 1968 in Cheyenne with one store serving only a few individuals. Today, we have 5 stores throughout the state and serving over 2,500 individuals a year right here in Wyoming. We know we serve a vital role in your community and we are always working toward increasing programs and services to individuals and filling service gaps for community needs. We have a responsibility to the people of Wyoming and we are working hard every day to fulfill those goals.
We are a CARF (Commission of Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities) accredited Program offering a broad range of services for individuals with disabilities. We are also accredited through the Wyoming Behavioral Health Developmental Disabilities Division. Goodwill Wyoming offers job placement, vocational assessment and job coaching services to assist individuals in obtaining economic and social independence. We also offer day habilitation, in home support services and independent living training for individuals. We also provide community programs helping youth in several capacities. Goodwill Wyoming also offers many community services to include foster youth, adoption efforts, senior worker employment opportunities, second chance efforts for returning citizens, partnership programs with other non-profits and so much more!

History of the Goodwill Movement
Goodwill was founded in 1902 in Boston by Rev. Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister and early social innovator. Using a gunny sack he carried on his back, Helms collected used household goods and clothing in wealthier areas of the city, then trained and hired those who were poor to mend and repair the used goods. The goods were then resold or were given to the people who repaired them. The system worked, and the Goodwill philosophy of “Not Charity, but a Chance” or “not a hand out but a hand up” was born.
Dr. Helms’ vision set an early course for what today has become a $5.7 billion nonprofit organization with 163 individual Goodwill agencies throughout the United States and Canada. Helms described Goodwill Industries as an “industrial program as well as a social service enterprise…a provider of employment, training and rehabilitation for people of limited employability, and a source of temporary assistance for individuals whose resources were depleted.”
Times have changed, but Helms’ vision remains constant: “We have courage and are unafraid. With the prayerful cooperation of millions of our bag contributors and of our workers, we will press on till the curse of poverty and exploitation is banished from mankind.”
Locally, Goodwill came into existence as a small retail store in 1964 through the efforts of the late C.N. Bell, and was a satellite of the Denver Goodwill.
Through Mr. Bell's intense concern for those with disabilities, the facility grew into a complete Vocational Development and Living Skills Program both located at 1920 Thomes Avenue, plus a large retail store at 3301 East Nationway.
Goodwill Industries of Wyoming was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in February 1968, for the primary purpose of providing vocational rehabilitation and living skills to those with disabilities living in Wyoming.
Local community members are elected each year to the Board of Directors. They give their time and experience without pay.
